What Is GWP and Why Does It Matter for Refrigerants?
When we talk about cooling systems, refrigeration, air conditioning, or cold storage, we often get to hear the term GWP.
But what does GWP actually mean?
GWP stands for Global Warming Potential. In simple words, it tells us how much a greenhouse gas can lead to global warming compared with carbon dioxide (CO₂).
CO₂ is used as the reference gas, so its GWP is 1.
A refrigerant with a higher GWP can have a greater impact on the climate if it is released into the atmosphere.
Why Is GWP Important for Refrigerants?
Refrigerants are an important part of cooling systems. They help remove heat and keep systems such as air conditioners, cold rooms, chillers, freezers, and cold storage facilities cool.
Normally, the refrigerant stays inside the system. But leaks, poor servicing, or improper disposal can release refrigerants into the atmosphere.

Suppose a refrigerant has a GWP of 1,470.
This means that over 100 years, 1 kg of this refrigerant could have about 1,470 times more impact on global warming than 1 kg of CO₂.
This doesn’t mean that the refrigerant is always harmful during normal use. The main concern is what happens when its leaked into the atmosphere.
Cooling Systems Have Two Environmental Impacts
When we think about the environmental impact of cooling systems, we often think only about electricity.
But there are two important areas to consider:
1. Energy use
Cooling equipment needs electricity to operate. If that electricity comes from fossil fuels, it can lead to CO₂ emissions.
2. Refrigerant emissions
If a refrigerant leaks from a system, it can also contribute to climate change depending on its GWP.
